The Faculty of Arts offers eight English-taught research master’s programmes, designed for academically talented and ambitious students who are eager to dive into the world of research. Unlike regular one-year master’s programmes, our two-year research masters provide a deeper, more focused research experience. Our research master’s offer a great deal of academic flexibility. You’ll have the opportunity to design custom-made courses with your lecturers, allowing you to focus on the topics that inspire you most. Whether you want to explore new areas or deepen your expertise in specific fields, the choice is yours. You can also take courses from other disciplines, pursue research traineeships, or gain international experience by studying or conducting research abroad.

After Your Research Master

Graduates of our research master’s programmes leave with highly developed academic skills and the ability to absorb and analyse complex information. This makes you exceptionally well-prepared for a PhD position or other research-related roles. Archaeology

Archaeology Research Master’

The Archaeology Research Master’s prepares you to tackle societal issues like climate change and migration through archaeological research. You can specialise in fields such as archaeometry, human osteology, digital archaeology, and heritage studies. You'll develop vital skills with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and expert instructors conducting global research.

History

Research Master’s track in Classical, Medieval, and Early Modern Studies

The Research Master’s track in Classical, Medieval, and Early Modern Studies prepares you to explore the history, literature, and culture of significant civilisations in Europe and the Middle East. You can specialise in areas such as history, literature, or classics while gaining essential skills in research tools for studying the premodern world, including digital humanities.

International Relations

Modern History and International Relations

The Master’s track in Modern History and International Relations prepares you to engage with key global issues. You will explore subjects such as international political economy, the history of cultural identity, and European cooperation and integration. Working closely with highly qualified researchers in small groups, you’ll develop essential skills for a successful career.

Cultural Leadership

Cultural Leadership

The Research Master’s track in Cultural Leadership prepares you to become a cultural leader in a rapidly changing society. You will explore the management of culture through policy, entrepreneurship, and education, addressing challenges like digitisation and diversity. You"ll be able to conduct research into cultural leadership and foster a sustainable cultural future.

Arts, Media and Literary Studies

Arts, Media and Literary Studies

The Master’s track in Arts, Media and Literary Studies prepares you to explore the role of the arts, literature, and media in society. You can specialise in areas such as cultural studies, digital humanities, and film studies, gaining essential research skills. This programme equips you with the knowledge needed to become an expert in the dynamic relationship between the arts and culture, both now and in the past.

Language and Cognition

Language and Cognition

The Language and Cognition programme prepares you to explore the intricate relationship between language and the mind. You can specialise in fields such as neuro- and psycholinguistics, communication studies, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics, developmental linguistics or discourse analysis, developing essential research skills to investigate how language shapes our understanding of the world.

Clinical Linguistics

Clinical Linguistics

You'll explore the complexities of language processing and its relationship with brain function in the Clinical Linguistics track. You will investigate questions like how language is stored in the brain and the impacts of brain damage on communication. As part of the Erasmus Mundus programme, you’ll receive training in neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and clinical linguistics across three European universities.

Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing

The Double Degree track in Natural Language Processing prepares you to address the challenges of modern media and multilingual data collection. You will study the interplay of Theoretical Linguistics and Computer Science in a dynamic environment. As part of the Erasmus Mundus programme, you’ll begin your studies in Groningen and complete your degree at a partner university, earning two Master's degrees.
