About us Faculty of Arts Study at our Faculty Bachelor Admission and application

Language requirements BA

The Faculty of Arts offers a broad range of degree programmes, many of which are English-taught. Dutch-taught programmes are also no longer taught entirely in Dutch. Every degree programme includes teaching that is partly in English or the option to choose English-taught course units or Minors. For this reason, everyone starting a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Pre-Master’s programme must demonstrate sufficient English language skills. The required level can be found under the entry requirements of the degree programmes.

The language requirement can be met by presenting a VWO diploma or passing a language test. The language test certificate must be submitted to the Office for Student Affairs .

The language tests mentioned below are automatically accepted when the scores are sufficient:

Cambridge

You can take a Cambridge language test (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency). This test is offered by the British Council at multiple locations in the Netherlands, including Leeuwarden.

TOEFL

Another option is to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This language test is offered around the world. You can take a TOEFL language test at the Language Centre of the UG, but also in Amsterdam or in the south of the Netherlands.

IELTS

Finally, prospective students can take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) language test. This test is offered by the British Language Training Centre (BLTC) at multiple locations in the Netherlands, including Zwolle.

The IELTS Online test is not accepted.

If you have any questions about the English language requirement, please contact the Office for Student Affairs.
