Icelanders are known for publishing a relatively large number of books, which means that there is also a rich tradition of reading in Iceland. We even have a word that translates to ‘Christmas book flood’: Jólabókaflóð, because we give each other so many books at Christmas. But one of my favourite Icelandic books is a work that almost every Icelander has on their bookshelf: Völuspá, the first book of the Poetic Edda.

The Völuspá describes the prophecies of the seer Völva. She tells about the creation of the earth, its first inhabitants and the first people. This book is one of my favourites because you can read it five times and discover a different story each time. When I first read it in 2021, I did so in the context of a reading group. It was incredibly interesting, because we all noticed different things. This is exactly what I would recommend to everyone: take on a hugely complex work and discover together with others what you can get out of it.

Íslendingar eru þekktir fyrir að gefa út hlutfallslega mikið af bókum, sem þýðir að bókmenntahefð er sterk á Íslandi. Við höfum ekki að ástæðulausu orðið Jólabókaflóð. Ein af mínum uppáhalds íslensku bókum er þó verk sem nánast hver einasti Íslendingur á í bókahillunni sinni: Völuspá, fyrsta ljóð Eddukvæða.

Völuspá segir frá spádómum völvunnar. Hún lýsir því hvernig jörðin varð til, fyrstu íbúum hennar og fyrstu mönnunum. Þessi bók er ein af mínum uppáhalds vegna þess að maður getur lesið hana fimm sinnum og fundið fimm mismunandi sögur í henni. Þegar ég las hana fyrst árið 2021 var það í leshópi, sem var ótrúlega áhugavert þar sem við tókum öll eftir mismunandi hlutum. Þetta er nákvæmlega það sem ég myndi mæla með við alla: takið flókið verk og sjáið hvað þið getið uppgötvað í sameiningu.
