Classical Studies (Classics)

Classics has a long history at this university: its very first Rector, Ubbo Emmius, was a professor of History and Greek (1614). Nowadays the department of Greek and Latin in Groningen is home to an active group of researchers of international reputation, who study ancient literature in its social and cultural contexts. We offer BA and MA degrees in Classics which reflect this focus on an integrated approach to the classical languages. Some of are courses can also be taken as electives, among these are Greek and Latin for Beginners, in which these languages can be learnt from stratch. We also offer the minor Mirror of Myth, and contribute to the minor Rhetorics, and thereby contribute to the growing interest in the relevance of the Classics (for which see below).
