"Infiltrators" - A documentary screening at Palestine Cinema Days

When:Sa 02-11-2024 20:30 - 22:00
Where:RKZ BIOS - Emmastraat 15, Groningen

On the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration (1917), The Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen will team up with Palestine Cinema Days around the World. The evening starts with the screening of Khaled Jarrar's debut film Infiltrators (2012), followed by a Q&A with the director.

Launched in 2014, Palestine Cinema Days is an annual film festival taking place across several Palestinian cities. Since the start of the war in Gaza and ongoing Israeli military attacks on the West Bank, it has become impossible to organize this festival in Palestine. This year, Palestine Cinema Days has become a global event: standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people, several cities around the world will host film screenings to shed light on the ongoing dehumanization of Palestinians and to honor their daily struggle against colonial occupation and military oppression.

Infiltrators (2012)
The checkpoint is closed: “Detour, detour!” shouts a taxi driver, announcing the beginning of yet another search for a way around the barriers curtailing Palestinian movement in the West Bank. Infiltrators is a “road movie” that chronicles the daily efforts of Palestinians of all backgrounds in their search for openings through a bewildering matrix of walls and barriers. Jarrar followed Palestinians for over four years on their search for openings in the wall to East Jerusalem. With his handheld camera, Jarrar hides behind the barbed wire and on the side of roads documenting the daily ordeal of Palestinians living under occupation. At the 2012 Dubai International Film Festival, Khaled Jarrarʼs debut documentary won the Muhr Arab Documentary Prize, the Special Jury Prize, and the International Critics Prize.

Khaled Jarrar (1976) is a Palestinian filmmaker and visual artist born in Jenin, Occupied Palestine. Currently based in New York City and Ramallah, Jarrar works in various media including photography, video, sculpture installation art and performance art. His work explores the realities and the impact of the occupation of Palestine. After graduating from the Palestine Polytechnic University, he smuggled himself to work as a carpenter in Nazareth, living as an underground “illegal” worker. In 1998, Jarrar enlisted in an intensive military training which resulted in working for Arafat as a personal bodyguard until Arafat’s death in 2004.
