The Metaphor Corner

Do you know that feeling? You've been asked to give a speech at a wedding or to address a departing colleague. The thought alone makes you break out in a cold sweat. Not to worry! Here you will learn to be original. You will experience that you can be creative with language (and that metaphors can have great effect). In three steps you will come up with your own original metaphor for a festive occasion.

What is it like to have dyslexia or dyscalculia? You can find out through a few tests, conducted by the Centre for Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. Do you already know what it’s like to be dyslexic? Then you can go here for information about extra support offered by the university.

Gronings, Drents, Twents or Stellingwerfs, what do these regional languages actually have to do with each other and how do they differ? Discover the varieties of Low Saxon and test your regional language sense. If you guess where these poets come from, you will have a chance to win a great prize.

Monstrum: Playing with medieval ecologies

Can you free the animals from their book of beasts in time? In the game Monstrum, you are invited to explore the medieval animal kingdom. Come into contact with real and mythical creatures and learn how they were thought of in the past and why that is still important for the world today. Test out the game and tell us how we can make it even more exciting.

Become a language astronaut!

Have you always dreamed of becoming an astronaut? Are you curious what it's like to lie in an MRI scanner? And do you want to know what a language test looks like? We give you the opportunity to become a real language astronaut! You will participate in a special space training and can earn a real space diploma. During the training you will work with language tests to experience how language research works. We also simulate an MRI examination, so you can experience what it would feel like to be in a real MRI. This is all part of a large study on how children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) understand, learn and produce language. Not sure what a DLD is? We will explain this during the training.

How do you write (Dutch)?

If you are just learning the language, it can be difficult to understand a Dutch text properly. How can the writers of such texts take this into account? During this experiment, Penny Heisterkamp and Veerle Baaijen investigate whether it is possible to adapt your writing style to the level of someone who does not yet have a good command of Dutch. You will hear what stumbling blocks people learning Dutch encounter, and what you yourself can do to make internationals feel welcome.

The literary pharmacy

Come to the consultation hour, have a conversation with our 'book doctors', and receive a personalized book prescription. Our experts will advise you with reading tips on Wadden literature, grief literature, and graphic novels. They'll offer advice to those who don't read (also useful for anyone trying to get a partner, child, or friend into reading!), and for our youngest visitors, there will be a children's book doctor available.

The Linguistic Corner

What do linguistics students engage in? The research pet names, for instance, or language change, language in children with autism or language in math books. The linguistics corner presents all these projects in an interactive and accessible way. Are you in secondary school and looking for inspiration for your profile paper (profielwerkstuk), or are you a teacher looking for interesting content for a lesson?

Van der Velde

At the Van der Velde bookshop stall, you will find all kinds of books related to the activities at the festival. For example, you can bring your prescription from the literary pharmacy or find a book by one of our speakers. And how about the novels on the new Spraakmakende Boeken reading list?
