The Decolonize Hub is a project supervised by lecturers Iva Pesa, Maarten Zwiers, Barbara Henkes, and Arnab Dutta from the FA – History department. You can find out more about most of them in the ‘Research’ section. To bring the Decolonize Hub into fruition, two former students from the Faculty of Arts; Patricia Leistner and Habiba Ali have been conducting research and created all the content for the Hub.

Habiba Ali

My name is Habiba Ali and I am an International Relations and International Security Master student. Currently I am writing my thesis on the topic of Decolonizing migration with a focus on the bi-cultural identity formation of the ethnic Afro-Caribbean diaspora in relation to Dutch migration discourses and practises. I am passionate about learning, engaging in dialogue and sharing knowledge related to anti-racism, the politics of representation, inclusivity, and decoloniality. During my time as President at Black Ladies of Groningen (BLOG) I encountered with the ‘’Decolonize Hub’’ through our collaboration on an anti-racism workshop within the Faculty of Arts. I joined this project because I want to contribute towards a more progressive university environment; an environment in which everyone feels included, represented, safe and heard.

Patricia Leistner

My name is Patricia Leistner and I am currently a second-year Research Master student in International Relations and Modern History. During my Bachelor in History, I discovered my academic but also personal interest for topics related to the lasting impacts of colonialism and how we can challenge these through the practice and theory of decoloniality. For me, embracing decoloniality is part of fighting for social justice which is something I aspire in my academic work but also in my personal life. The “Decolonize Hub” offered me an opportunity to express and share my thoughts with the hope to change something within the context of the university.
