Why new stories matter in times of war

In this war-torn time, it is of great importance to continue paying attention to the power of words and the stories we tell with them.

Slavicist and professor Ellen Rutten lived, traveled, and studied for a long time in Central and Eastern Europe. During the Arts Lecture, she will share her professional and personal insights on (re)reading stories from this region and other parts of the world.

Rutten begins her lecture with memories of her teenage years on the beaches of the Black Sea and concludes with the work of Ukrainian poets Victoria Amelina and Ilya Kaminsky. About her lecture, Rutten says: “Stories are much more than plain amusement. They help us to stay open, stay safe, and stay sane.”
