Community
Welcome to the Jantina Tammes Community!
The Jantina Tammes School is the University of Groningen’s interdisciplinary centre dedicated to digital society, technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The UG has three additional interdisciplinary schools: for governance, politics, and sustainable processes (Rudolph Agricola School), for energy transition and climate (Wubbo Ockels School), and for public health (Aletta Jacobs School).
The Jantina Tammes School explores how societies can optimally benefit from and contribute to digitization, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI). Our motto: digital prosperity for all. On the one hand, we investigate the ways in which human-centred digital technologies and AI can be developed and applied. On the other hand, we study the coupling of digitization, datafication and different domains of society and how this affects the daily lives of citizens. We do this by engaging in multidisciplinary research and education, and in close cooperation with societal partners.
Opportunities for all
The Jantina Tammes School, named after the first female Dutch professor of genetics, focuses on digital society, technology, and artificial intelligence and therefore is constantly developing opportunities for everyone.
-
We build new research partnerships that have the potential to lead to innovative questions and breakthroughs that will benefit academia and society.
-
We create opportunities for researchers to be visible in and interact with society.
-
We create innovative teaching programmes for students who want to tackle regional and global challenges.
-
We develop courses, workshops and lectures for professionals, youth and interested parties from the general public.
-
We encourage students to collaborate with students from other disciplines and with external parties, so that they acquire new skills and improve their chances on the labour market.
But we do not do this alone. Cooperation is at the heart of our School. We cooperate within the University by combining knowledge from different faculties, and we cooperate beyond the University’s walls to bridge the gap between science and society. For example, we collaborate with ENLIGHT and the European University Alliance to facilitate student exchange programs. We represent the UG in local, national, and international organisations such as the UNL’s Digital Society Project, the Dutch AI Coalition, the Dutch National Research Agenda, and EU platforms. We also contribute to the public debate and organise public events in conjunction with Studium Generale, the University Museum, and Science LinX. We also help to organise Kenniscafés.
The added value of the Jantina Tammes School
Understanding the many facets of digitization, data-intensive activities, and technological innovations requires a multidisciplinary approach. For this very reason, the Jantina Tammes School unites researchers from different backgrounds, from science and technology to humanities and social sciences, to work together to solve complex issues and ‘wicked challenges’.
We work closely with societal partners such as other knowledge institutions, companies, government bodies, cultural organisations, and citizens in the north of the Netherlands and beyond. Together with our students, who we train to be able to contribute to a digital society, we are shaping the digital future.
