Work at the 'Ringweg' exit to Zernike Campus

15 March 2019

The Zernike Campus Groningen is set for redevelopment in the next few years. The plans include the redesign of the Zernikelaan and an improved link between the northern ring road and the Zonnelaan. This week, c ontractor Oosterhof Holman will start preparatory work on the Ringweg exits.

Partial closure and diversion

The connection to the ring road will be widened. To this end, the street lighting will be moved this week and the foundation for the second lane will be placed next week (18-23 March 2019). During that week the exits will be closed alternately between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic is diverted via the next exits.

About the design

The work is part of the redesign of the Zernikelaan. The municipality of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen and the University of Groningen are working together to improve the traffic situation and appearance of the Zernikelaan. They invest heavily in accommodation quality and road safety that will boost the atmosphere and appearance of the Zernike Campus.

New traffic measures on the Zernikelaan will improve cycling safety while promoting smooth passage for cars at the same time. There will also be separate bus, car and bicycle lanes and a footpath, each separated by greenery. The Zernike promenade will become a park alongside the pond, the bus lane and the road. The trees, both older and newly planted, and the bicycle and footpaths will create an unbroken, attractive 1600 metre-long belt across the campus. The area next to the Duisenberg pond will form the new green heart of the campus.

This summer, work will be done on the connection to the Ring and the campus entrance.
