The ideology of the education gap

22 April 2025

Jaap Nieuwenhuis (associate professor in the sociology department) writes on BNNVARA's opinion site about the debate on the so-called gap between the higher and lower educated. He indicates that sometimes this is nuanced about the diversity of political opinions within different educational groups, and sometimes it is rather boorish about the dumb right-wing mob versus the woke know-it-alls. The main reason this divide exists is because people imagine it exists. That goes for both well-intentioned people who try to understand and bridge the gap, and for malicious people who stir up the gap for political gain. The question is whether the gap between the higher and lower educated is the gap we need to focus on if we want to understand and solve current problems in society, such as inequality and poverty.
