Ten Groningen science students win national Young Talent prize
On November 26th, ten students of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (University of Groningen) were presented with the Young Talent Prize by the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) in the city of Haarlem. The prizes are for the advancement of higher scientific education in the fields of science and technology and are made available by businesses, foundations, and funds in the respective fields.
Three Master’s students of the Faculty of Science and Engineering won the Young Talent Graduation Award :

Luna van der Loos MSc Marine biology |
Enza Zaden Graduation Award for Biology, for her Master’s theses: Predicting the responses of seaweeds to ocean acidification: unexpected growth and photosynthetic responses of species with different carbon uptake strategies | 3,000 euros. Enza Zaden is a plant breeding company. The journal Ecology and Evolution published an article on Van der Loos' study* |
Victhalia Zapata Castillo MSc Energy and Environmental Sciences |
Dutch Gas Industry Award, on her Master’s theses: Hydrogen from desert areas. Hydrogen production in desert areas for export in comparison to a Dutch domestic hydrogen system | 2,000 euros. The award was made possible by the KVGN. |
Seven first-year Bachelor’s students won a Young Talent Incentive Award of 500 euros. They are the best first-year student of the Netherlands in their field, with the highest average score of their year. The awarded students are:
