CAE: Computer Aided Engineering
Engineering is the systematic development, based on acquired knowledge, of products for specific purposes and according to current quality standards.
The computer is an excellent tool for product optimization, this is strongly reflected in one-off production (it has to be ‘right first time’; FTD works ‘at the frontiers of knowledge’). FTD is able to optimize a product at the design stage, by simulating the conditions under which the product will be used and analysing their effect on the 3D product model. Examples are the effects of temperature, pressure and vibrations/natural frequencies.
The importance of identifying the effect of design wishes and requirements becomes clear when one considers that 60 – 70% of the final product costs are incurred in the design phase.
