Study Association

A study association is an organization run by a team of students from the respective bachelor’s and master’s degree programme(s). The FSE study associations organize many activities for students, including introductory camps and monthly “borrels” (informal social gatherings, often with drinks), but also more serious events such as company visits or conferences. Study associations differ from the general student associations where the degree programme is irrelevant. And study associations do not have hazing rituals.

FMF

Welcome to the FMF! We are the Physics and (Applied) Mathematics study association, but we’re open to members from across the FSE. We pride ourselves on being a very diverse and accepting, friendly community. Whatever your interest is, there is often someone around who shares it! We have a cozy members’ room where people from all stages of their studies like to grab a coffee between classes, work on homework, or just hang out, and if you have any questions about your courses there’s almost always someone in the room who can help you. We also organize events specifically for master students.

Our annual Symposium is our pride and joy, and along with our magazine, “Periodiek”, helps us broaden our members’ scientific horizons. On the more social end, we enjoy a drink (especially at “kamerborrels” in our members’ room) and we are also known for our board games evenings, LAN party and our annual Integration Competition, which lets our members show off their math skills in a friendly competition with each other and with some of our favourite professors. Every year we organize a foreign excursion where we visit institutes and universities interesting for both Physics and (Applied) Mathematics students.

Last but not least, it’s important to know that the entire association is run by students, for students. All the activities mentioned are organised by our lovely committees. This means that you can also contribute to it. If you want to organise something fun, the FMF can provide you with the means to do it! If you’re interested in this “behind the scenes”, you know where to find us. You can find us and our calendar of activities on our website or see pictures of what we’re up to on our Instagram and Flickr. We are excited to see you in September!

T.F.V. 'Professor Francken'

T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' is the study association for Applied Physics students in Groningen. It was established in 1984 and named after the professor who brought Applied Physics to Groningen in 1962. The intention of T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' is to fulfill the interests of the growing number of Applied Physics students, but we also welcome students from related studies.

Our members’ room, often called the Franckenroom, is a popular place to be. Members can come by to get a free cup of tea or coffee, buy some cheap snacks or toasties, relax between classes, get help with their homework, or enjoy a game of klaverjas. Activities are organized by the committees on a regular basis, these include social, educational, and career-oriented activities, such as:

● Social activities (e.g. dinners, barbeques, borrels, hitchhiking, etc.)

● Practice sessions and soft skill workshops

● Excursions and lunch lecturers with technical companies

● Talks from research groups by Professors and PhD student

● A Symposium with talks from professors and companies related to a specific research field

We also have a committee especially for first-year students, to give them an opportunity to socialize with each other and organize some fun activities such as a dinner and a party.

In addition, our excursion committee organizes an annual trip to a foreign country. During which, we explore the country and its opportunities in the field of (Applied) Physics. T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' also cooperates with other associations to set up more career-oriented activities, such as “The Beta Business Days” and “Expedition strategy”, so that students can get into contact with companies and see what career opportunities are available. We also buy and sell second-hand textbooks, which you can find on our website.

As you can tell, the association T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' has a lot to offer. The events we organize are a great complement to your Applied Physics studies and a gateway to engage with other students of all years within the field. If you would like to become a member or simply want to have a free cup of tea or coffee, come by the Franckenroom in NB 5113.0002.

For more information, please visit the website of T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' and join our announcement WhatsApp group to hear about our upcoming activities.
