At the Faculty of Science and Engineering, students are expected to bring their own laptops to class. This enables you to utilize the full potential of your laptop without dependence on computer labs and ensures seamless integration of your personal electronic devices for academic purposes. Below, we outline recommendations for personal devices based on a thorough analysis of software students will likely use throughout their bachelor's or master's program.

Your laptop has to meet the FSE minimum requirements as mentioned in the menus below. If possible, we advise you to purchase a device that meets the FSE recommended requirements.

In case you are unable to obtain a laptop that meets these requirements, please contact your academic advisor.

Operating System (OS): Windows 11

Compatibility and support cannot be guaranteed with MacOS, Linux distributions (including ChromeOS), and Windows on ARM.

RAM: 16 GB

Storage: 512 GB SSD

CPU:

Intel Core i5 12XXX U/P/H (12th generation and up)

Intel Core 5 1XX U/P/H (14th generation and up) (1XX is also referred to as ‘Series 1’)

AMD Ryzen 5 75XX U/HS (and up)

Laptop model release: <=3 years ago

Graphics card (GPU): No dedicated graphics card

Connectivity:

Type-C (Thunderbolt 5, 4, 3, USB4, or USB 3.2*) for display and power

*USB 3.2 only with specific mention of DP Alt mode and Power Delivery for video and power compatibility. With USB4 and Thunderbolt, these requirements are implied.

Type-A (USB 3.2, 3.1, 3.0) or a Type-C to Type-A dongle/hub

Battery: 50Wh (and up)

Extra: Wi-Fi, webcam, microphone

Graphics card (GPU): Yes, a dedicated graphics card (only applicable to AI and CS students)

Connectivity:

Type-C (Thunderbolt 5, 4, 3, or USB4) for display and power

Type-A (USB 3.2 or 3.1)

Battery: 75Wh (and up)

Extra: Wi-Fi, webcam, microphone

FSE tips

A laptop sleeve or a backpack with a sturdy laptop slot will keep your device safe.
A well-built laptop will be more robust and last longer. These are usually the business models which are also easier to repair and to upgrade.
Go for a screen of at least 14 inches. Your eyes will thank you.
Try to meet the requirements. That way, you will be able to confidently use your laptop for a longer period.

Ask the shop chat/employees for help when choosing a device that meets the requirements. Academic advisors are not well-equipped to answer technical questions.
Most laptop brands and vendors have dedicated student stores or student discounts. These often contain better/longer warranties and lower prices, but this is not always the case, so make sure to look around and compare!
