About CLT

The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) aims to enhance the quality of education at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) by promoting innovative education and professionalization. Its mission is to support lecturers, to promote student engagement and learning, and foster an inclusive community that utilizes contemporary learning theories, evidence-based education, teaching innovations, and interdisciplinarity.

Values Statement

  • Learner-centered education: we promote teaching approaches that place the learners at the center and support them to take active roles and responsibilities
  • Innovative education: we promote cutting-edge instructional methods, strategies, curriculum materials, and technology tools
  • Evidence-based education: we promote educational practices that are rooted in contemporary educational research
  • Inclusive and equitable education: we promote the design of inclusive and equitable learning spaces that capitalize on the value of diversity

Goals

The Center aims to support the Faculty of Science and Engineering's strategic vision on education by:

  • Serving as a platform for resources, partnerships, and support related to science and engineering education
  • Providing advice, guidance, and professionalization on teaching innovation and inclusion
  • Providing opportunities for staff to engage in educational research endeavors

The CLT consists of four units:

ISEC - Institute for Science Education and Communication

Staff

If ISEC were a card, it would be the joker: fitting at different places and serving different goals. We are a young, interdisciplinary, diverse research group with experts in science, mathematics, and engineering education and communication who lead research projects that widen and diversify STEM engagement of all citizens in formal and informal settings.

The overarching goal of ISEC’s research programme is to improve science and engineering education through research. This is done through explorative and intervention-based studies that include the development, implementation, and impact evaluation of curriculum materials, pedagogical tools and instructional strategies.

Our vision is framed around three main goals:

  1. To contribute towards the quality of science and engineering education in schools and the university through the design, implementation and evaluation of theory-informed and evidence-based curriculum materials
  2. To provide university instructors and school teachers with professional training that aims to transform the teaching and learning of science and engineering and enhance students’ academic achievement
  3. To support the engagement of students and the general public with science and engineering in formal (e.g., university, school) and informal learning settings (e.g., science centers and museums)

Areas of research interest and expertise include: training of teaching assistants in physics, innovative teaching practices in mathematics, the use of augmented and virtual reality in science, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, the use of Artificial Intelligence in science education, as well as social, cultural, and gender issues in science.

DEI - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Team is proud to be one of the units which operates under the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT).

Our team consists of trainers and project leaders who all work towards celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion and equity at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE).

Our Mission

Put simply, the DEI team aspires to “make diversity count” at FSE.

Our main goal is to promote and -wherever possible- to implement inclusive and equitable practices in the teaching and learning initiated by FSE.

As Honours College FSE team, we offer a bachelor as well as a master programme within our faculty.  Being part of the Centre for Learning and Teaching gives us an excellent opportunity to establish an environment for teachers to implement and evaluate educational innovations. For students the Honours College is the place where they can experience research and interdisciplinary education and interact with students and staff from various faculties or companies.

Bachelor

The Honours College bachelor programme is designed for talented and motivated students who are able and willing to deepen and broaden their bachelor degree contents. It is a complementary programme of 30 EC that students can follow next to their regular degree programme. The programme has a duration of two and a half years, in which intensifying the knowledge of the student’s regular degree programme mainly by doing research in the student’s own field of interest (15 EC, FSE deepening part), and broadening of knowledge and understanding are central themes (15 EC, broadening part). Together with students from all faculties, they are challenged in  multidisciplinary teams to look into scientific and social issues from different angles. On this account, teamwork is very important, next to inclusion and appreciation of diversity of the population of students/learners and receiving and providing personalized feedback. For more detailed information of the broadening part of the Honours bachelor programme, please visit this website, for the deepening part you can visit our website

Master

For master students we provide the FSE High Tech Systems and Materials Master’s Honours  programme. Innovation is the core of this programme. The programme has been developed in cooperation with companies of the Innovatiecluster Drachten (like Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Astron and BD Kiestra) and aims to equip talented, motivated students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in this field of expertise.
