Bonaventure and the Early Aquinas on Free Choice
Abstract:
This paper will study five key topics concerning free choice (liberum arbitrium) in Bonaventure and the early Aquinas: (1) Free choice as emerging from reason and will; (2) the eminence of free choice; (3) counsel and deliberation; (4) the psychological foundation of free choice; (5) the relationship between reason and will. In these topics, we will be able to discern the germs of two different approaches to free choice that will come fully to light in the free will debate that took place in the first decades after their death in 1274.
