The Faculty of Economics and Business looks back on a successful ETSG conference
The Faculty of Economics and Business looks back on a successful edition of the Annual Conference of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG). FEB hosted the 23rd edition of the conference from 8 to 10 September in Groningen.
ETSG is the world's largest conference for theoretical and empirical research related to international trade and trade policy. The conference brought together researchers from academia and governmental agencies including, amongst others, the World Trade Organization, European Commission, Inter-American Development Bank and international statistical offices. Apart from giving economists the opportunity to present their research, the ETSG conference also celebrated outstanding scholarly work by young economists through two awards.
Awards
The annual WTO Essay Award for Young Economists was awarded to Mathilde Muñoz (University of California - Berkeley), with an honorable mention for Torsten Søchting Jaccard (University of Toronto). In addition, the Review of World Economy's Young Economist Prize was awarded to David Torun (University of St. Gallen). Apart from presenting these awards, the conference also paid special tribute to the life and work of the late Professor Peter Neary by introducing the "Peter Neary Plenary Session", which was held by Professor Peter Egger (ETH Zurich).
Inspiring and invigorating
The local organizers, Professor Steven Brakman and Associate Professor Tristan Kohl, look back at an inspiring conference at MartiniPlaza. Kohl: "After 2 years of online and hybrid conferences, it was invigorating to engage with colleagues once again in a fully on-site event. We were pleasantly surprised to see especially junior researchers maintain a high-quality level of work, despite the pandemic."
De Nederlandsche Bank, the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of Global Economics & Management of the Faculty of Economics and Business sponsored this year’s meeting. The connection between the University of Groningen and ETSG will continue in the years to come: Tristan Kohl has been appointed as a member of the Managing Board, in which capacity he will contribute to the design and realization of ETSG conferences for the foreseeable future.
