Creating a nice neighbourhood together is not always easy. You have to like each other, understand each other and give each other space. During the Let’s Gro festival of inspiration on Friday 1 November, urban sociologist Frans Soeterbroek and professor Manda Broekhuis will discuss how citizens and government can find some common ground.
In the Groningen neighbourhood of Selwerd, citizens and professionals are working together to improve the area. Under the leadership of Broekhuis, research will be conducted over the coming years into how informal structures (such as Wijkbedrijf, the neighbourhood social and support centre) and formal structures (like the municipal support teams organized by Wij) are working together in this area and what sort of influence this collaboration has on the prevention and reduction of socioeconomic-based health differences. This research has been awarded a major grant by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw), an organization promoting innovative healthcare research.
Good ideas and management by residents
During the Let’s Gro festival, sociologist Soeterbroek will talk about how you can build a relationship based on trust and equality. Professor Broekhuis will explain how and why good, practical ideas about how to build a healthy and pleasant neighbourhood must go hand-in-hand with effective management by the residents themselves and the other people who are involved.
Buffet in the new neighbourhood restaurant
Coming Friday 1 November from 4.30 p.m. onwards, you can get to know Selwerd by visiting the new neighbourhood restaurant De Duindoorn. Here, you can take a glimpse of the neighbourhood through the eyes of the individuals who make up Selwerd’s very DNA, all the while enjoying a stamppot buffet.
