The article Heroic or hubristic? A componential approach to the relationship between perceived transformational leadership and leader-member exchanges, published by Niels van der Kam, Gerben van der Vegt, Onne Janssen and Janka Stoker was selected as the best paper published by the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology (EJWOP) in 2015. This award, sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership, carries a $1,000 cash prize.
The publication is based on Van der Kam’s PhD research from 2012 among 60 managers and 286 employees. In this award-winning article, the researchers prove that transformational leaders who overestimate themselves have poorer exchange relationships with their team members, as personal overestimation prevents them from investing sufficiently in these relationships. ‘As a result, team members are also less inclined to invest in their relationship with the manager,’ according to second author Van der Vegt. ‘This is especially true for extravert team members, who by nature are inclined to strive for a close personal relationship with their manager.’
