Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Yes! I am Karlijn, I am 21 years old and I originally come from a little village near Utrecht. After I graduated high school I first went abroad for 9 months to travel around Australia and New Zealand, which was a great experience!
Was it hard to go start college after such a long time?
Not really! When I came back I was really excited to start studying at the university, because I actually already knew what I wanted to do: studying Business Administration in Groningen.
Good to hear! What made this choice so easy?
To be able to make a choice I went to the Open Days of the UG, where I found out Groningen is an amazing city. The city gives you the feeling of a village, but it has the size of a city. Everyone knows each other and it is a really good place for students to live in. So after I travelled, I could not wait to get here!
And then you also became an active member of Risk right? What is Risk exactly?
Risk is a study association for the financial interested students at FEB. It contains 4 specific programmes: Finance, Accountancy & Controlling, Management Accounting & Control, and International Financial Management. But, anyone interested in the financial world can join us!
What did you do within Risk?
When I chose the track 'Accountancy & Controlling’ I learned about Risk. When I asked my housemate about it, who was also a member, she was very excited and told me it was a really good addition to your time at the UG. Therefore, at the end of my first year at the University I became a member of the committee responsible for the activities of Risk. This was great for a bachelor student like me!
And now you are even a board member right? How did you came to this position?
Yes I am! When I was an active member of Risk I became interested in becoming the board, because it offers you a very good learning experience. The fun thing about the board of Risk is that the board members are very close to other members of the association. This makes the atmosphere within Risk informal and fun. To make sure this position was really something for me, I went for a coffee with an old board member and the chairman of the current board. They really convinced me!
That sounds fun! But how do you combine all this?
Being a board member is a full time function. So this is why I do not follow all my courses anymore. I do try to follow some, but I do not mind if it does not work out.
And as a board member; could you explain why a study association is so valuable?
It has several purposes. On an informal level for example, it contributes to making new friends within your programme. We organize different activities for this, such as going for a drink or a cocktail workshop. On the other hand a study association can also help you on a formal level. We for example organize many study related activities, such as a company tour, in which you can get in contact with interesting companies!
And any plans for after your board year?
That’s difficult to answer! I do not think I will do another committee, but I will join a committee that serves as an advisory body for the new board at Risk. Also, I might start with a minor finance, followed by the master finance, but I am not sure yet!
In Groningen?
Yes, I think I will stay in Groningen!
