Why study in Groningen?

We asked our FEB students!

Groningen is a vibrant city, bursting with around 50,000 students from all over the world. This high number brings the average age down to 36 years, which makes Groningen the youngest city in the Netherlands. In Dutch we say: “er gaat niets boven Groningen”, which means there’s nothing that beats Groningen! Let’s check if our current students agree with this slogan.

Groningen is the ultimate student city – all your essentials are nearby, but there is also plenty of room for exploring. The city is totally student-friendly, offering the perfect blend of study spaces and a vibrant student life. I chose Groningen because it let me dive into Dutch culture while embracing a diverse community of international students!

The student life in Groningen is second to none as it is an incredibly international city full of life seven days a week. It is a calm, picturesque city with plenty of cultural events on offer throughout the year from international film festivals, art exhibitions and fantastic music concerts, clubs and festivals. I chose to study here for the MSc Economic Development and Globalization programme as it offers a unique opportunity to explore the economic topics that shape the world around us while also giving us the skills to make sense of the major issues facing nations across the globe. Not only that, we also gain the economic tools that can make a massive difference in policy, industry and society when we start our careers.

Groningen is a great study destination because of its vibrant and multicultural environment. Being in such a vibrant student community allows me to interact with a wide range of cultural environments, giving me different perspectives on outlooks. I initially chose to study here because of the renowned university and the opportunities for personal and professional development. While studying here, I have been able to branch out and learn about the wide range of professional opportunities.

Once I finished high school, I sought out the best university which would not only fit my academic needs but also let me enjoy my entry into adulthood and help me develop as an individual. Soon I realized that the University of Groningen (UG) ticked all of my boxes and I haven't looked back since - being a student in this city has broadened my horizons, and I have made both personal and professional connections that I will bring with me far into the future. For all future students thinking of choosing UG, I can assure you that you will not only be challenged academically, but you will also make memories that last a lifetime.

I think the combination of students from all over the country (and the world!) with the sometimes town-like feeling, makes Groningen the perfect city to study. It gave me the opportunity to get the most out of my study career with excellent facilities and at the same time create a great social network. From the first walk in the city and onwards, Groningen has had a convivial and intimate appearance to me that gave me a feeling of being at home. All these years later, this has not changed.

I chose the city of Groningen because of the coziness the city has to offer! The city is not very big, which makes it very relaxed and everything can be reached within 15 minutes by bike. Many students live there and there is always something going on because of the many student and study associations. The fun in the city goes on until the early hours, in Groningen, you will not get bored easily!
