Sustainable Finance

Profile of MSc Finance

The Sustainable Finance profile combines financial principles with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations. You learn how to make financial decisions that promote long-term value creation while addressing sustainability challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and corporate ethics.

You study how to assess and integrate ESG factors into financial models, investment decisions, and corporate strategies. Examples include:

  • green bonds funding renewable energy projects,
  • ESG-focused investment portfolios,
  • carbon trading markets,
  • impact investing to generate social and environmental benefits,
    and financing aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These initiatives drive responsible investment and address global challenges like climate change and social inequality. 

Course list

All MSc Finance students will take the following mandatory courses:

  • Advanced corporate finance
  • Portfolio theory
  • Research methods for finance

If you choose to follow the Sustainable Finance profile, you will take three additional mandatory courses:

  • Sustainable finance
  • Corporate governance
  • Financing the energy transition

Alongside these mandatory courses, you can tailor your learning by selecting from a wide range of electives. To deepen your expertise and understanding, you will write an individual thesis on a topic of your choice, focusing on your selected profile. This combination of courses and research equips you with specialized knowledge of sustainable finance. You can find a full list of electives here.

After your studies

If you pick the Sustainable Finance profile, you can work in corporations and financial institutions to support and implement the development of such policies.

Examples of possible work fields:

  • Corporate strategy: advising companies on incorporating sustainability into financial decision-making.
  • Investment management: designing ESG-focused portfolios for institutional and individual investors.
  • Consulting: guiding organizations on ESG reporting and compliance with sustainability regulations.
  • Policymaking: assisting governments in creating policies for green investments and sustainable economic growth.
