 Investment and Risk Management

Profile of MSc Finance

The Investment and Risk Management profile will give you the skills to analyze, manage, and optimize investment portfolios while identifying and mitigating financial risks.

It combines principles of asset valuation, portfolio theory, and risk management to prepare you for roles in investment firms, banks, and corporate financial departments. Real-world examples include:

  • BlackRock's portfolio management,
  • J.P. Morgan's risk assessment models,
  • Apple's currency hedging strategies.

These practices help maximize returns, protect assets, and ensure financial resilience in dynamic markets.

Course list

All MSc Finance students will take the following mandatory courses:

  • Advanced corporate finance
  • Portfolio theory
  • Research methods for finance

If you choose to follow the Investment and Risk Management profile, you will also take three additional mandatory courses:

  • Derivative instruments
  • Institutional investment management
  • Banking, insurance and risk management

On top of these, you have the opportunity to select elective courses from a wide range of topics. Additionally, you will write an individual thesis on a topic of your choice within the field of investment and risk management. After your studies

If you take the Investment and Risk Management profile, you will develop advanced knowledge about institutional investing, derivatives, and risk management in banking & insurance. Some career options include (but are not limited to): 

  • Portfolio manager: overseeing and optimizing investment portfolios to meet client objectives.
  • Risk analyst: identifying and mitigating risks in financial institutions or investment portfolios.
  • Investment analyst: conducting market research and asset evaluations for investment opportunities.
  • Hedge fund analyst: analyzing and executing investment strategies for high-net-worth clients.
