Are you interested in a career in finance?

The University of Groningen, in the Netherlands, offers two programmes in this field:

What is the difference between the two Master’s degrees?

MSc International Financial Management (IFM)

MSc Finance

Become a specialist in corporate finance, financial reporting, and accounting and start your career in multinational companies, financial institutions, public organisations, and governmental institutions. In addition, you can choose to specialise in audit and financial consulting.

The MSc IFM has a strong focus on the international aspects of corporate finance practices and academic research. You will gain knowledge and skills on how to work with both firm- and country-level data. You also get relatively more diversity with a broader multinational perspective on the fields of finance, accounting, control, and management to learn about many aspects of the business world.

Become a financial expert with the skills and knowledge to analyse and solve complex financial problems encountered by companies, investors, governments and international organisations.

The MSc Finance allows you to choose a broad education in finance, covering various aspects of financial management, investments, sustainable and development finance, financial analysis, and corporate finance. You do this by choosing the General Finance Profile. However, you can also specialise in one of the other profiles (Corporate Finance, Investment & Risk Management, Sustainable Finance or Development Finance). This is one of the few programmes where you study theories and get to see them implemented in practice.

Study courses in:

  • Financial Management for Multinationals
  • International Management Accounting & Control
  • International Financial Reporting
  • International Financial Institutions and Governance

What is unique about the programme in Groningen is the possibility to tailor your programme based on your interests (a wide rage of elective courses) and specialise in five different fields:

  • Corporate finance
  • Investment and risk management
  • Sustainable finance
  • Development finance
  • General finance

Possibility to follow electives or specialise in sustainability in finance; international banking and finance; the role of cross-country differences and the economic environment in explaining the global world as well as institutional and governance characteristics.

Elective courses such as Business Research and Consulting as well as Value Based Management cover topics that are highly relevant to the job prospects of IFM graduates. Moreover, it is possible to target a focus area of financial development, energy, and sustainability.

The programme has a strong focus on addressing relevant topics such as sustainability, energy, finance, and development. If you want to deepen your knowledge in these topics, you can choose to follow a Focus area in Energy, Sustainable Society or Finance and Development.

Study abroad option by taking the Double degree master with Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Milan, Italy.

Study abroad option by taking the Double degree master with Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) in Sweden.

The programme has a strong link with the corporate world. Real-life cases are used to teach how to approach problems in practice, and alumni are regularly invited to provide guest lectures about the current trends in the corporate world. Advisory board members who are also IFM alumni, are frequently consulted to improve and assure the practical relevance of the programme.
