Cross section
The quantity cross section (commonly denoted by the Greek letter σ) describes the probability that a specific process will take place in a collision of two particles. The corresponding unit is sqare meter (m2).
The quantity is primarily used in atomic and nuclear physics. The old unit barn (b) is still often used.
