1.2. Key aspects of supervisory success throughout the PhD trajectory

During this workshop we will look at the individual phases of the PhD trajectory you will gain insights into how to best:

• Clarify expectations within the supervisory team and with the PhD candidate.
• Make the best of the foundational months of the trajectory.
• Guide the PhD candidate throughout the ups and downs of the middle part of the trajectory.
• Facilitate the finalization of the dissertation and the defense.

This workshop is based on the online course “Successful PhD Supervision” and supplements it with practical exercises and discussion activities. Attention will be given to cases brought by the participants and by the trainer, with the aim to exchange experiences and good practices.

After this training you will have gained insights into how to:

• Set clear expectations with the co-supervisors and the PhD candidate on the output and the process of the trajectory;
• Provide structural guidance in the first year and work towards the go no go decision.
• Adapt your supervision style based on the specific needs and phases of the trajectory.
• Identify key aspects that enable the completion of the PhD within the allotted time.
