1.4. Supervising the PhD Thesis Writing Process

Writing a thesis (book, monograph, chapter, paper) is sometimes thought of as something that comes naturally because each person has an individual style of writing. Within that context, supervisors can support their PhD students by teaching them a systematic approach to developing a scientific storyline and guiding them in discerning which elements matter in drafting a text. In this workshop we combine theoretical aspects of thesis writing with practical tips and tools to add to your supervisory toolbox. When do you start talking about the table of contents of the thesis with your PhD student?, what are effective ways to give feedback on thesis writing?, how do you deal with authorships and other aspects of publication strategies? At the end of the workshop, participants have shared their good practices in supporting their PhD students in thesis writing.

Programme

The 3 hour workshop offers a mix of providing information and exercises to reflect on personal experiences with supervising thesis writing. In this way participants gain insight in practical tools to deal with struggles of their PhD students, and guide their learning process in academic writing.

To prepare for the workshop, participants are requested to consider various experiences with their PhD/Master students: which factors determined whether supervising the writing process was more or less effective and smooth?
