Green light for Master’s in Voice Technology

The Master’s in Science degree programme in Voice Technology will start in September 2021

The new one-year Master’s degree programme in Voice Technology at the University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân has been accredited. This Master’s programme is unique in Europe, as it is dedicated exclusively to voice technology.

With more and more devices making use of voice recognition, voice technology is one of the fastest growing sectors and is already a million dollar industry. Whenever you tell your smartphone to call someone, learn a language using an app or ask a smart speaker such as Alexa or Google Home for the weather forecast, you are using voice technology. However, voice technology applications are increasing by the day. For example, they can be used by people with writing, language or speech problems to express themselves, but they can also be used to help to preserve minority languages.

The Master’s degree programme in Voice Technology is an academic degree programme that focuses both on speech and technology. This means that the programme is suitable for students with a linguistic background and students with backgrounds in subjects such as artificial intelligence or computer science. The programme has been developed in consultation with Dutch tech companies and established names in Silicon Valley, the tech hotspot of America. Students will learn both the theory and the practice of voice recognition, for example by developing their own voice-controlled applications.

The director of the new degree programme, assistant professor Matt Coler, says: ‘With a world-class interdisciplinary team, excellent facilities and an internationally-renowned Advisory Board, we are ready to welcome our first generation of students. Our partners in industry share our enthusiasm for the programme. The combination of linguistics and computer science coupled with competence in ethics and interdisciplinary cooperation make our graduates attractive contenders for key positions.’
