Lucy Spoliar
There were relatively many applications from the Faculty of Theology & Religious Studies this year. Lucy Spoliar was finally appointed as the winner from this pool of nominees selected by the faculty.
After a Bachelor's degree programme in Theology and International Studies from the University of Durham (UK; completed with Honours), Lucy switched to Groningen and is now working on a Research Master in Theology and Religious Sciences. She is doing an excellent job, with an average mark of 8.8. According to the presentation letter written by the faculty, she is eager to learn and has a clear goal in mind. She wants to acquire a PhD position to obtain a place in the academic world in the long term.
In her motivation letter, Lucy indicates that she likes to challenge herself (‘venturing outside her comfort zone’) and shows that she is learning a lot from it. Her interests are in religion, gender and culture.
Apart from her studies, she is involved in various related presentations at international conferences, and has now published several publications. She is also very involved in the faculty community as a Master’s Ambassador and she is responsible for preparing the student chapter for the self-evaluation report for the Research Master.
She was also involved as a student assistant in the organization of the Summer School and the conference on ‘Religion and the urban, natural and virtual environments’ and in supporting lecturers in teaching and research.
The jury believes that Lucy has everything it takes to become an excellent and socially involved scientist in the long term.
