Master in Industrial Engineering & Management

Why Groningen

When I first thought about going back to studies, I was in the middle of my gap year. I decided, if I go for a masters, then it would be to enjoy life in a proper student city. And that’s what Groningen is. It’s a little charming town but looking closer it’s super vibrant due to the great number of students. And no worries, a large part of them is also international, so you are not on your own when kicking off this chapter of studying abroad. From the beginning onwards you have a lot of touch points with other students, might that be through welcoming events or living in a dorm/student flat. Only thing left that you need to get started is your bike. With under 15 mins you get to the city park, university campus and sports club, or you just check out the nice cafes and restaurants which you can find in every corner of the city.

Why the University of Groningen?

I decided to apply and come to the RUG, because I thought it was the best package when looking at being in an international city, studying in English and in my case finding the right mix of engineering and business – That’s how I ended up studying Industrial Engineering and Management at the RUG.

You will hear and read a lot about the reputation of the university. Indeed, compared to my bachelor studies back in Germany, I found it very easy to get started, regarding online platform and organization. People at the Uni are super open and easy going, ready to discuss with you your ideal study plan. In my case I was looking for a more practical approach and with the curriculum I had the chance to go abroad to the USA for an internship and had a great experience.

Biography

I am Meikel, 27 and I graduated from the RUG one year ago. A little to my background: Having Portuguese roots, I grew up in Germany and did there my bachelor studies. Afterwards I worked for a year in aerospace, before moving to Groningen. For me the chapter in Groningen was an extremely marking experience, I made great friends and discovered some of the interests I still follow now. It pretty much set me up for my current journey, where I am living in Barcelona, working on my start-up. In my free time I enjoy cooking, gathering for dinners and spending time with friends and family outdoors. If all of that didn’t scare you away yet;

I am happy to help you with any questions you have about the RUG or your kickstart in Groningen.
