Your Role
As an art history scholar, you engage with colleagues and scholarship beyond your immediate field of modern and contemporary art. You teach across the BA curriculum, integrating art, architecture, and landscapes, and contribute to the MA track Art History & Curatorial Studies. Your strong pedagogical approach allows you to develop innovative and inclusive learning formats, fostering an engaging academic environment. You have excellent social skills, strong communication, mentoring and organizational skills, and are able to work with an international, diverse team of colleagues and students.

The Faculty of Arts

Program
The Programme of History of Art, Architecture and Landscape is searching for an Assistant Professor in Modern & Contemporary Art. The position is located in the chair group of Art History & Material Culture. The research and teaching in this group ranges from medieval to contemporary art history, set in a global context, and is characterized by transhistorical, theory-minded, and materials-, object-, and place-based approaches, as well as artistic research methods. In addition to these strengths, the group actively engages with technical art history, curatorial practice, and artistic methodologies, bridging scholarship with hands-on expertise. Members of the group supervise more than 20 PhD students. They have strong networks within and beyond the Netherlands, engage in individual and collaborative research projects, and work with cultural institutions, museums and other partners in the field.

What You Bring
For this role, we are looking for someone who:

• Holds a PhD in Art History or is set to defend their dissertation within six months.
• Has expertise in Art History (with a focus on the Netherlands), Curatorial & Museum Studies, Eco-criticism, or related fields.
• Brings university-level teaching experience and a strong pedagogical approach.
• Has a solid research track record, including relevant publications.
• Builds connections with professionals in Museums and Cultural Institutions.
• Is fluent in Dutch & English (CEFR B2/C1).
• Has organizational and managerial skills to contribute to research and educational program development.

We offer in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for Dutch universities:

• It is an employment contract for the duration of 18 months, with the possibility of an extension.
• A salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 4,537 to a maximum of € 6,209 (salary scale 11) gross per month for a full-time position.
• 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
• participation in a pension scheme for employees.
• favourable tax agreements for non-Dutch applicants may be applicable.
• 232 holiday hours per calendar by full-time employment.
