Job description
As Lecturer you will contribute to teaching undergraduate and graduate students in several courses. In the course Landscapes, you will provide lectures and practical and participate in the fieldwork weeks in Drenthe and Groningen. The course teaches students to unravel the structure and composition of (rural) landscapes. There is a strong emphasis on the relevance of historical landscape composition to present-day land use, but also on research training skills. Other courses you will take a role in are Bachelor Project, Reflecting on Human Geography & Planning, and People, Place and Culture. Involvement in Physical Geography and in the GIS course at bachelor level is also an option.

The Faculty of Spatial Sciences at the University of Groningen is looking for a Lecturer in Cultural and Natural Landscape Geography, with knowledge of landscape geography in the Dutch context.
The Faculty of Spatial Sciences (FSS) focuses on high quality teaching and research in the fields of spatial planning, economic and cultural geography and demography. FSS is also well-embedded in a wider range of disciplines, such as social, political and technology sciences. Our vision is to spatially transform society to support wellbeing and innovation. Our mission as a faculty is to undertake and disseminate, via research and teaching, rigorous and distinctive research which helps to realize this vision. FSS employs around 100 academic staff members, over 100 PhD candidates, and serves about 1100 students. We are a cohesive Faculty committed to internationally-oriented, interdisciplinary research of high societal relevance with our new research programme Transformations, Communities, and Environments (TRACE), which encompasses socio-spatial transformations; wellbeing, equity, and resilience for people and places; and socio-spatial differences and sustainable development.
As Lecturer you will be positioned within the department Cultural Geography. This Department is involved in the master programs Economic Geography, Sustainable Rural Futures and the Research Master, and the bachelor program Human Geography & Planning. Research at the Department of Cultural Geography focuses on senses of place and identity, the relations between people and places, and the social experience of transformations in rural and regional communities. This position of Lecturer in in Cultural and Natural Landscape Geography aims to strengthen our teaching capacity within the fields of (historical) landscape development, and human and cultural geography.
Qualifications
- MSc in Human Geography, Landscape History or a related socio-spatial discipline.
- Experience in teaching or presenting for a larger audience.
- Knowledge of landscape geography in the Dutch context.
- Enthusiasm for exchanging knowledge and inspiring students.
- Knowledge of experience in research methods and spatial analysis (incl. GIS) is preferred.
- Fluent in English and has knowledge of or is willing to learn Dutch.
- Having a PhD is an advantage.
- Meets the obligatory requirement for the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or the willingness to follow a course to obtain these requirements within two years.

Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary dependent on qualifications and relevant work experience up with a minimum of € 3,378 to a maximum of € 5,331 gross per month (scale 10 Dutch Universities) for a fulltime position
- excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
- participation in a pension scheme for employees and attractive secondary terms of employment.
The appointment of this lecturer is a position for three years. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for the University of Groningen.
Starting date: 1 September 2025.
