Tips & Tricks - Privacy & Security

We ❤ Privacy & Security

1. Lock your PC and mobile phone if you leave them unattended

It only takes a few mouse clicks to install a virus on your computer and enable others to access your data, mailbox, and accounts. Taking a break? Or just out to grab a cup of tea? Make a habit of locking your computer!

2. Create strong passwords

Hackers can easily guess simple passwords. Therefore, you should always install a strong password consisting of at least 14 characters. Use a different password for each of your accounts, preferably in combination with extra login code (multifactor authentication, MFA)

3. Always work with a secure connection

Free, public Wi-Fi networks, for example in a beer garden, are not secure. Such a network is usually unsafe and cybercriminals can easily access your device this way. If you have a secure connection, nobody will be able to see what you are doing and the data you transmit will be safe Wherever you are, you should always work via uwp.rug.nl or via a UG VPN connection

4. Be alert to phishing emails and suspicious texts and app messages

Hackers can lay their hands on your data via scam links or install malicious software (malware). Make sure you always check the sender of emails and WhatsApp or SMS text messages. Always double-check whether links can be trusted.

5. Save and share data securely

Of course, you do not want to lose your data or have it fall into the wrong hands. Always use the University facilities for saving and sharing data. This way you will comply with privacy legislation, backups will be arranged for you, and you will remain the owner of the data

6. Take care of your own devices (updates, locking, and security features)

Updates aim to protect you from digital intruders. Allow your computer and telephone to automatically install updates. Always use a virus scanner on your computer at home

7. Only use the least data possible

You are not allowed to store and use personal data any longer than necessary. Only collect personal data that are necessary. Delete your data as soon as a project or mailing activity is completed

8. Do not use WhatsApp for professional data

Free programs and apps are often not really free. You indirectly pay by giving away your (UG) details. Never send work data via WhatsApp. Always use the apps, programs, and data storage offered by the UG for your work and studies

9. Regularly clean up your data

Print out a list with all your fellow students? Save an additional download from your club's membership database locally, just to be sure? Make sure you know what you do with these data. Never leave personal data lying around on your desk or computer. Regularly tidy up your computer by deleting (old) documents. And it's good for the environment too!

10. Immediately report any incidents

Together, we are trying to limit the consequences of data breaches and cyber incidents. Have you accidentally listed all email addresses in the CC field, has your laptop or telephone been stolen, or have you clicked on a phishing link? Report immediately! It happens to the best of us.
