Richard Bintanja

Richard Bintanja is hoogleraar klimaat en milieuveranderingen. Hij studeerde meteorologie aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij promoveerde op onderzoek naar het antarctische klimaat (“The Antarctic Ice Sheet and Climate”) en werkte vervolgens als postdoc bij het Instituut voor Marien en Atmosferisch Onderzoek Utrecht (IMAU).

Sinds 2007 werkt Bintanja als klimaatonderzoeker bij het KNMI. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses gaan uit naar het klimaat van beide poolgebieden. Hij heeft geavanceerde klimaatmodellen gebruikt om toekomstige veranderingen in het poolklimaat te kwantificeren en te begrijpen. Bintanja’s werk begon met meteorologische en glaciologische waarnemingen tijdens verschillende expedities naar de noord- en zuidpool. Hij heeft meerdere poolexpedities gedaan naar Antarctica, Groenland, IJsland en Spitsbergen.

Sinds 2017 is Bintanja hoogleraar klimaat en milieuveranderingen aan de Faculty of Science and Engineering aan de RUG. Verder is hij hoofdredacteur van het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Meteorologica.
