Elhorst, Prof. Paul
Paul Elhorst is professor by special appointment in Regional Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business. Regional unemployment in the north of the Netherlands is one of the most important research themes of his chair.
Paul Elhorst (1958) studied econometrics and gained a PhD in economics at the University of Amsterdam. He joined the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen in 1992. Elhorst concentrates on two main themes in his research – regional unemployment and its cost, and the practical policy consequences of his research is regularly shared with government institutions. His research not only uses data from the three northern provinces, but also from other EU regions faced with similar problems, because the North and the EU cannot be viewed in isolation.
