Nollen, Prof. Ellen

Ellen Nollen
Ellen Nollen

Nollen, a medical geneticist, researches the genetic source of the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s within the framework of the Healthy Ageing programme. She has previously conducted research into this at Northwestern University in Chicago (US) and at the Hubrecht Laboratory, the Ronald Plasterk’s KNAW institute in Utrecht. Nollen discovered that the moag-4 gene regulates the aggregation and harmful effects of disease proteins during the process of cell ageing.

Ellen Nollen was the first female researcher to be awarded a Rosalind Franklin Fellowship at the UMCG. The University of Groningen and the UMCG set up the Rosalind Franklin Fellowships to attract talented female researchers. In 2011 she was awarded a EUR 1.5 million European ERC grant for her research. The ERC grants are intended to further reinforce outstanding research teams.
