Jeronimus, Dr Bertus
Bertus Jeronimus is an assistant professor and personality researcher at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Jeronimus studied Dutch Law and Clinical and Developmental Psychology at the UG. In 2015, he obtained his PhD at the UG for a thesis on the influence of environmental factors (such as stressful incidents) on neuroticism, a personality trait that makes people more emotionally unstable than others.
In his current research, Jeronimus is mostly focused on the differences in personality and feelings of happiness between people and the environmental factors that might influence this, such as work, social contact and other daily activities. To this end, he has received a Veni grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
Due to his research and expertise, Jeronimus regularly appears in the media. He was recently in the news a number of times to discuss the psychological consequences that the coronavirus and the restriction measures have on individuals. Among other things, he predicts that people will become less open-minded and tolerant in the long term due to the reduction of social contact. Still, there are also positive consequences, according to Jeronimus, as people may value their current social activities more. In order to map these consequences effectively, he began a research study via the platform hoegekis.nl.
