Iris Vis

Iris Vis is hoogleraar Industrial Engineering aan de Faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde. In haar vakgebied draait het om het ontwerpen en verbeteren van processen en systemen, zoals distributienetwerken, productie- en dienstverleningsprocessen. Daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van diverse methoden, waaronder wiskundige modellering. In haar onderzoek legt Vis de nadruk op het ontwerpen en optimaliseren van containerterminals, de voertuigroutering en -toewijzing, het klantgericht voorraadbeheer en supply chain management.

Vis heeft een masterdiploma in de wiskunde van de Universiteit Leiden en promoveerde aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Eerder was zij universitair hoofddocent aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en gastonderzoeker aan CIRRELT (Montreal/Quebec City, Canada), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Blacksburg, USA) en Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA).

Vis was tevens een tijd lang Dean of Industry Relations aan de RUG. Ze werkte vanuit deze functie aan het versterken en uitbouwen van de samenwerking van de RUG met het bedrijfsleven en non-profit organisaties. Ze zoekt graag de interactie met bedrijven en non-profit organisaties. Vaak begint dat met een persoonlijk bezoek aan een bedrijf of met een ontmoeting zomaar ergens in het land. Dat levert vervolgens inspiratie voor onderwijs en onderzoek. Contacten kunnen leiden tot projecten waarin vragen van bedrijven en fundamentele onderzoeksvragen worden samengebracht, waarin onderzoeksresultaten worden gevalideerd in de praktijk, waarin implementatiebegeleiding wordt gegeven, of waarin beleidsadviezen voor directies worden opgesteld. Met veel plezier presenteert Vis resultaten van onderzoek tijdens in-house trainingen bij bedrijven en op praktijkcongressen. Een van de hoogtepunten op dit gebied was de presentatie van onderzoeksresultaten aan Koningin Máxima.
In juli 2023 is Vis benoemd tot Captain of Science van de Topsector Logistiek.
