Han Olff

Han Olff is hoogleraar Ecologie bij de Faculty of Science and Engineering. Hij is gespecialiseerd in ecologie, biodiversiteit, natuurbeheer, natuurbescherming en duurzame landschappen. Olff is in 1988 afgestudeerd als bioloog aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In 1992 promoveerde hij in Groningen in de ecologie. Daarna was hij bij de Universiteit Wageningen en in de Verenigde Staten werkzaam als onderzoeker. In 2002 is hij aangesteld als hoogleraar in de Community and Conservation Ecology aan de RUG. Hier doet hij onderzoek naar biodiversiteit en natuurbeheer in zowel Nederland als in tropische savannes en regenwoud.

In zijn onderzoek richt Olff zich op de structuur en het functioneren van diverse gemeenschappen en ecosystemen, met in het bijzonder aandacht voor de interactie tussen planten, herbivoren, detrivoren en predatoren. Met de uitkomsten van zijn onderzoeken geeft Olff advies over natuurbehoud. Naast zijn werk aan de RUG is hij toezichthouder bij het Wereld Natuurfonds (WNF) en bij ARK Natuurontwikkeling. Olff zit in de Wetenschappelijke Adviesraad van het Parc National du Banc d'Arguin, Mauritanië en van het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee. Hij is ook bestuurslid van het Netherlands Ecological Research Network (NERN).
