Kick-off symposium Digital & Green Maritime Coalition in the Northern Netherlands
Last Thursday 28 November, the spotlight was on the maritime sector of the Northern Netherlands during the kick-off symposium of the Digital & Green Maritime Coalition. This inspiring event launched a powerful collaboration between the maritime industry, the government, and knowledge institutions — including the University of Groningen (UG) — aiming to future-proof the sector through digitization and sustainability improvements.
The symposium brought together over 100 professionals, employers, policymakers, and innovators from the three northern provinces to discuss the latest developments and technologies in the maritime sector. Speakers highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in preparing the sector for tomorrow’s challenges, including the energy transition and the digitization of shipping and logistics.
Collaboration as the key to success
During the event, various speakers presented concrete examples of sustainable maritime innovations. The main themes were emission-free shipping, smart port logistics, and using artificial intelligence in ship-building, covering issues ranging from data management to using smart robots. The day ended with the establishment of the Digital & Green Maritime Coalition, a unique partnership that will support and scale up innovative projects in the region. To this end, road maps will be established with the aim of developing and retaining talent in the region, as well as investing together in the region.
Response from the sector
According to Jouke de Vries, President of the Board of the University of Groningen, this initiative is a crucial step: ‘The maritime sector holds a key role in increasing the sustainability of our economy. By combining technology and knowledge, we are placing the Northern Netherlands at the forefront of sustainable shipping.’
Next steps
In the upcoming months, the coalition will present concrete plans to contribute to a greener future. Important priorities are stimulating innovations, boosting international competitiveness, and creating employment opportunities within the sector.
