University of Groningen jumps 10 places in prestigious Shanghai Ranking list
This year the University of Groningen has moved up a staggering 10 places in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (also known as the Shanghai Ranking), from 92nd place to 82nd place. This is the second year in a row that the University has made a huge jump in the ARWU, which is generally considered the most reliable quality measurement of universities worldwide. Last year the University entered the Top 100 at no. 92.
The ARWU is a list of the global Top 500, published annually in August by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Because the list is based on clear methodology and objective data, it is regarded as the most reliable in the academic world. ‘The fact that we have not only maintained our position in the top 100 but also significantly improved it is an indication that we are on the right track to strengthen our position as a world-renowned international research university’, says Prof. Sibrand Poppema, President of the Board of the University.
The universities of Utrecht (52 to 57), Leiden (74 to 77) and the VU University Amsterdam (100) are in the top 100 along with Groningen. Just as in previous years, the list is headed by Harvard University.
In addition to the general ranking list, there is also an annual ranking list for a few specific scientific disciplines and fields. They reveal that the University of Groningen is in the top 100 in the disciplines Chemistry (51-75) and Economics/Business (76-100), and in the ‘broad fields’ of Clinical Medicine/Pharmacy (76-100) and Social Science (76-100).
