In the summer of 1287, at the height of Mongol rule, a remarkable Asian traveler arrived in Europe to negotiate a super-alliance between East and West. Despite the discovery of the traveler’s diary, this extraordinary chapter in East-West relations remains largely unknown. Yet many of the problems encountered by this explorer on his journey to Europe remain central to the study of contemporary Mongolia and East Asia. Following the route of this traveler from Beijing, through Baghdad to Rome and Paris, Tjalling Halbertsma explores three inter-connected research themes on contemporary Mongolia and East Asia: the importance of institutions; the importance of history for identity; and the importance and complexities of international relations for Mongolia. What are the main social, economic and political opportunities and challenges facing Mongolia today? And can Mongolia fulfill its international ambitions at a time that its domestic challenges are rapidly accumulating?
