Ben Feringa

Ben Feringa (1951) heeft de Nobelprijs voor de Scheikunde 2016 toegekend gekregen. Feringa is sinds 1988 hoogleraar organische chemie. Hij is een van de beste wetenschappers van dit moment, zowel in Nederland als mondiaal gezien. Zijn onderzoeksprestaties zijn zo uitzonderlijk dat hij algemeen gezien wordt als één van de meest creatieve en productieve chemici ter wereld. Op verschillende terreinen van de chemie heeft hij doorbraken weten te bewerkstelligen, zoals op het gebied van organische synthese, de katalyse, de supramoleculaire chemie en de nanotechnologie.

Zijn ontdekking in 1999 van de ‘moleculaire motor’, een door licht voortgedreven roterende molecuul, wordt algemeen als een doorbraak van wereldformaat aangemerkt. De potentiële toepassingen van dit concept zijn even talrijk als spectaculair. Bijzonder tot de verbeelding sprekend is het idee dat moleculaire motoren zich via de bloedbaan voortbewegen om geneesmiddelen met grote precisie naar tot op heden ontoegankelijke plaatsen in het menselijk lichaam te transporteren. Mede door Feringa is de RUG onbetwist de nummer één van Europa op het gebied van de scheikunde.

Feringa is onderscheiden met tal van prijzen, waaronder de Spinozapremie in 2004, de hoogste wetenschappelijke onderscheiding in ons land, toegekend door NWO. In 2008 benoemde de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie voor Wetenschappen (KNAW) Feringa tot Akademiehoogleraar. Daarmee werd hij in de gelegenheid gesteld om zich vijf jaar lang geheel naar eigen inzicht bezig te houden met innovatief onderzoek en onderwijs. In 2011 ontving hij de Van ’t Hoff-medaille. Deze wordt eens in de tien jaar door de Universiteit van Amsterdam uitgereikt voor werk op het terrein van de chemie. Voor zijn onderzoek naar moleculaire motors ontving hij in mei 2013 een grote TOP-subsidie van NWO.

In 2013 ontving Feringa de Lilly European Distinguished Science Award, gevolgd door de Marie Curie Medal, de hoogste onderscheiding van de Polish Chemical Society voor chemici van buiten Polen, en twee belangrijke Japanse prijzen. In september 2014 ontving hij de Cope Scholar Award van de American Chemical Society, de grootste wetenschappelijke organisatie ter wereld. In november 2015 ontving hij de Chemistry for the Future Solvay Prize. In 2016 ontving hij voor de tweede maal een prestigieuze ERC Advanced Grant van 2,5 miljoen voor zijn onderzoek naar door licht aangedreven moleculaire motoren. Hij wil ze nauwkeurig kunnen controleren, zodat ze te gebruiken zijn om slimme materialen te maken die reageren op licht.

Samen met Anouk Lubbe schreef Feringa in 2022 het boek Alledaagse Moleculen. Het rijk geïllustreerde boek geeft een toegankelijk overzicht van 180 stoffen uit ons dagelijks leven.

Nobelprijs voor de Scheikunde

In 2016 ontving Feringa de Nobelprijs voor Scheikunde. Feringa deelt de prijs met de Fransman Jean-Pierre Sauvage en de Brit Sir James Fraser Stoddart voor de ontwikkeling van moleculaire machines.
