Plagiarism scan

have your manuscript checked for plagiarsm with iThenticate

Do you want to scan a manuscript for plagiarism? Then these are the possibilities:

For all UMCG staff (except PhDs and their promotors!)
With the exception of PhDs, all other staff in the UMCG can turn to the Central Medical Library (CMB) to have manuscripts scanned for plagiarism. The CMB will perform the scan with iThenticate and provide a detailed report which can be discussed with the author. Please send us an email (cmb umcg.nl) or call us (050) 361 6200) to make an appointment.
Tip: use WeTransfer to send us large files, such as a dissertation.

For PhDs and their promotors
The Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) has a license for the plagiarism scanner iThenticate. Every promotor of doctoral students, has been given an account to iThenticate to scan their PhD theses on plagiarism. Therefore all PhD students should consult their promotors and supervisors to scan the manuscripts.
For more information on the use of iThenticate in the UMCG, please contact the GSMS via r.c.kroese umcg.nl

For lecturers/UG employees
The tool that the UG uses to scan for plagiarism is called Ouriginal. Ouriginal is exclusively intended for teachers and can be linked to assignments in Brightspace.
Manual from EDU Support about Ouriginal

There is also an option to scan documents separately from Brightspace, but that option is only available for employees with a P number:
Scan a document outside Brightspace

For students
The medical library does not make plagiarism scans for students, only for UMCG employees. Students are not expected to do a plagiarism scan, because they must learn to prevent plagiarism by citing sources correctly.

For more information, you can visit this page about plagiarism from the UG Language Centre. You can also take a look at their citations and references page (in Dutch). To cite correctly (and easily), you can use one of our reference management tools (we recommend students use Endnote).
