Merel Keijzer is hoogleraar English Linguistics & English as a Second Language. Ze doet onderzoek naar tweedetaalverwerving en tweetaligheid door het leven heen, en heeft daarbij een bijzondere interesse voor meertaligheid en veroudering. Wat is de beste manier (voor ouderen) om Engels te leren en kan het leren van Engels een positief effect op (mentale) gezondheid hebben? Als hoogleraar houdt zij zich bezig met het ontwikkelen van onderwijs op het gebied van Engelse taalkunde en Engelse taalontwikkeling, maar ook met het doen van onderzoek naar bestaande Engelse taalmethodes, van basisschool tot tweetalig middelbaar onderwijs en taalonderwijs aan ouderen, en de cognitieve effecten ervan.

Keijzer is gespecialiseerd in taalcontrole en cognitieve controle van tweetaligen gedurende de hele levensloop, met een speciale focus op tweetaligheid en cognitieve veroudering. Ze maakt gebruikt van zowel gedragspsychologische technieken als technieken uit de neuro-imaging om in kaart te brengen welke effecten patronen in het taalgebruik van individuele tweetaligen hebben op het type en de omvang van het cognitieve voordeel op latere leeftijd. Ze bestudeert ook hoe het gebruik van twee talen geïsoleerd kan worden van andere factoren die de cognitieve reserve beïnvloeden, zoals muzikale scholing, stimulerende sociale activiteiten en lichaamsbeweging. In 2018 ontving Keijzer een Vidi-beurs van NWO voor onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van het leren van een vreemde taal op twee ouderdomsziektes: milde cognitieve achteruitgang en ouderdomsdepressie.

Merel Keijzer is lid van de Young Academy Groningen en is in 2017 toegetreden tot De Jonge Akademie, een platform binnen de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen met jonge topwetenschappers die een vernieuwende visie hebben op wetenschap en wetenschapsbeleid.
